The Senate majority leader said he will offer Republicans a period of time for debate and a limited number of motions but will ultimately move to dismiss the trial to impeach Homeland Security Secretary Alejandro Mayorkas. “For the sake of the Senate’s integrity and to protect impeachment for those rare cases we truly need it, senators should dismiss today’s charges,” Schumer said on the Senate floor.

President Joe Biden and former President Donald Trump are now both in Texas, touring separate border areas and talking about security and migration. “This is like a war,” Trump said in Eagle Pass. “It’s long past time to act,” Biden said in Brownsville of attempts to move broad immigration and border reform through Congress.

Amid reports that the president is considering regulations and executive orders that would limit asylum seeking, the Republican speaker, who opposed the White House-backed bipartisan immigration deal, said in a statement that Joe Biden needs to act on more than just asylum policy. Johnson said he had previously asked Biden to take executive action on the border.

The Biden administration is considering enacting executive orders and regulations that would make it harder for migrants to seek asylum, including a trigger mechanism that would bar asylum seeking between ports of entries, as well as raising standards to qualify for asylum, Politico reports. These reported considerations come after the White House’s efforts to negotiate a bipartisan bill on Capitol Hill fell apart in the Senate.

After weeks of negotiating, the Oklahoma Republican says bill text is coming “hopefully” this week. “There’s no amnesty in this bill at all,” he told his local news station.

Meanwhile: The Oklahoma GOP passed a resolution this weekend that “strongly condemns” Lankford for pursuing what they called an “open border deal.” Some members of the party say the resolution was illegitimate.

In a private meeting, McConnell told Republicans that the politics “have changed” around border security negotiations now that Trump is poised to be the nominee. McConnell said Trump would rather campaign on the issue in 2024 than see Congress strike a deal, Punchbowl News first reported. “We’re in a quandary,” McConnell said. “We don’t want to do anything to undermine” Trump.

In an emergency ruling, the U.S. Supreme Court said border patrol agents are allowed to remove razor wire on the southern border until the legal question is resolved. The vote was 5-4. Texas Gov. Greg Abbott ordered sections of the border be lined with razor wire to stop undocumented immigrants; Texas sued the Biden administration to stop agents from cutting the wires. There have been reports of migrants drowning due to the barriers.
