The Arizona Senate has the votes to repeal a near-total abortion ban that’s been on the books since the 1860s. Two Republicans joined with Democrats to support repeal, which will next go to Gov. Katie Hobbs for a signature.

The Arizona Supreme Court, in a 4-2 decision, said that an 1864 law outlawing abortion in almost every instance is now enforceable. The law makes no exceptions for rape or incest, and abortions will only be legal if the life of the mother is in danger. “Arizona doctors are going to be afraid to do their jobs. It puts women at significant risk and, you know, makes us stand out as a state in, I think, the worst of ways,” Sen. Mark Kelly told NOTUS’ Oriana González in reaction to the ruling.
