Sen. John Barrasso, one of the senior Republican Johns expected to run for Senate GOP leadership, announced he will run for Republican whip, not leader. That leaves Sens. John Thune and John Cornyn as the Johns in the race to replace Mitch McConnell. More senators may jump in soon, John or otherwise.

Sen. John Cornyn told his colleagues this morning that he will run for Republican leader. “I believe the Senate is broken — that is not news to anyone,” he said in a statement that also played up his role in advancing Donald Trump’s agenda. “The good news is that it can be fixed, and I intend to play a major role in fixing it.”

The Senate GOP leader announced his plans to step down from his post in November, while remaining in the Senate. “I’m not going anywhere anytime soon,” he said. But he added, “Father Time remains undefeated.”
