Colorado Rep. Ken Buck announced today that he’d be leaving his seat in Congress next week instead of at the end of the year. With four vacancies in the House, Buck’s departure leaves Speaker Mike Johnson with the smallest of margins, 218-213, meaning he can only lose two members if he wants to pass party-line votes.

Congressional leaders met with President Joe Biden and Vice President Kamala Harris on Tuesday as the deadline to avoid a partial government shutdown approaches. “I think that it’s Congress’ responsibility to fund the government. We’ve got to get about doing it,” Biden said. On Monday, Republican Leader Mitch McConnell and Democratic Leader Chuck Schumer each spoke about the need to avoid a shutdown. Speaker Mike Johnson, meanwhile, said Tuesday he believes a shutdown can be prevented.

Days away from a partial government shutdown, Senate Majority Leader Chuck Schumer said leaders were still negotiating a funding package. He squarely blamed House Republicans for the delay who he said have “shown they’re more capable of causing chaos than passing legislation.”

House Republicans passed articles of impeachment against DHS Secretary Alejandro Mayorkas on Tuesday, 214-213, following a failed vote last week. Mayorkas is the first cabinet secretary to be impeached since 1876 but it’s extremely unlikely he will be convicted by the Senate.

House Speaker Mike Johnson defended his job on Wednesday after multiple significant votes failed in the House the night before. “Well, it was a mess, what happened here, but we’re cleaning it up,” he told reporters. “I don’t think this is a reflection on the leader. It’s a reflection of the body itself.”

The Office of Congressional Ethics concluded there is “substantial reason to believe Rep. Bowman willfully and knowingly” pulled a false fire alarm during the House’s heated fight over a short-term government funding last fall, but did not find substantial evidence that Bowman “obstructed or attempted to impede an official House proceeding.” As such, the House Ethics Committee said it would end its probe into the matter. Capitol Police investigated more than 8,000 cases of threats and “concerning statements” against lawmakers last year, up from about 7,500 the year before. And if the past is any indication, this year’s number may be even higher, since threats tend to rise during election years, per the Capitol Police.
