THE LATEST
The Pentagon is planning to deploy a combat-ready Army unit, the 82nd Airborne Division, to the Middle East as Donald Trump’s war with Iran appears to be escalating. There are no immediate plans for the roughly 3,000 troops to enter the country, but the decision appears to fly in the face of the president’s assertions that the conflict is “winding down.”
- “Pete didn’t want it to be settled,” Trump said this afternoon when asked about his plans to end the war.
- Saudi Arabia’s crown prince, Mohammed bin Salman, has also been a key voice urging Trump to continue fighting against Iran, The New York Times reports.
‘Any deal they make, I’m pretty much not happy with it.’ That’s what Trump had to say about a bipartisan DHS funding agreement coming into focus today in the Senate — but crucially, he didn’t say he’d veto the bill were it in front of him.
- “I’m going to take a good, hard look at it,” the president added following newly minted DHS Secretary Markwayne Mullin’s swearing-in ceremony.

THE HILL
Oklahoma Gov. Kevin Stitt makes his pick for Mullin’s replacement: Oil and gas executive Alan Armstrong. NOTUS’ Reese Gorman reported over the weekend that the decision was coming.
The founder of ‘Pastors for Trump’ is running for Congress in Oklahoma. Jackson Lahmeyer, who is also a member of the president’s National Faith Advisory Board, is mounting a bid for the state’s 1st Congressional District after Rep. Kevin Hern announced a bid for Mullin’s Senate seat.
THE ADMINISTRATION
King Charles III has scheduled his first state visit to Washington. The reigning British monarch will address a joint session of Congress during the last week of April, Punchbowl reports.
Trump tapped a self-described ‘alpha male’ social media influencer to be America’s so-called “brand ambassador.” Nick Adams’ official title will be “special presidential envoy for American tourism, exceptionalism and values,” a role under the State Department.
- The news comes after Adams’ nomination for ambassador to Malaysia reportedly fell apart.
THE COURTS
Marco Rubio spent three hours testifying at a Florida trial today. He was there to answer questions about his longtime friendship with former Republican Rep. David Rivera, who stands accused of carrying out a $50 million “secret political influence campaign” for Venezuela.
- Rubio claimed he knew nothing about the lucrative political consulting deal Rivera scored with a subsidiary of Venezuela’s state-owned oil and gas company, NOTUS’ Jose Pagliery reports from Miami.
A federal judge ordered the Trump administration to bring back a DACA recipient it deported to Mexico last month. U.S. District Judge Dena Coggins gave officials seven days to do so.
Minnesota officials are suing the administration for access to evidence from federal probes into the killings of Renee Good and Alex Pretti by federal agents.
- “At stake is not only Plantiffs’ access to evidence central to these shootings but also a fundamental principle of our constitutional system: that the States retain the sovereign authority—and responsibility—to investigate crimes committed within their borders,” the lawsuit reads.
The Supreme Court appears poised to let immigration authorities turn away asylum seekers, in a case that centers around a policy first used by Barack Obama in 2016.
- The high court will likely make its final ruling in late June or early July.
