He is also the author of a deeply reported book investigating the Biden administration’s disastrous policy on Gaza: CROSSING THE RED LINE, to be published by W. W. Norton in fall 2026.
Akbar frequently provides expert analysis and has reported across the globe, from military frontlines in Poland to Hamas safe houses in Qatar, and in 2019, he became the first-ever Pakistani to secure an Israeli press credential. Akbar has been selected for the Leadership Seminar at the Georgetown University School of Foreign Service, the East-West Center’s Korea-United States Journalists Exchange, the LGBTI in Foreign Affairs Fellowship at the Atlantic Council and the Boell Transatlantic Media Fellowship.
Akbar previously worked at HuffPost for nearly 12 years. He is a Yale University graduate who grew up in Karachi, Pakistan. In addition to English, Akbar speaks Urdu, French and Hindi.
