A Federal Agent Has Shot and Killed a 37-Year-Old Man in Minneapolis

Local law enforcement said a federal agent killed a white Minneapolis resident, who they believe is a U.S. citizen. The incident comes weeks after a federal agent shot and killed Renee Good.

A federal agent shot and killed a 37-year-old man in Minneapolis on Saturday, according to state officials.

The shooting occurred at approximately 9:03 a.m. in South Minneapolis, at 26th Street W and Nicollet Avenue, according to Minneapolis Police Chief Brian O’Hara. O’Hara described the man as a white Minneapolis resident and said local law enforcement believe he was a U.S. citizen.

The man was transported to the Hennepin County Medical Center with multiple gunshot wounds, where he was pronounced dead, according to O’Hara.

Local law enforcement and Minneapolis Mayor Jacob Frey said that they were operating on limited information. O’Hara called it an incredibly volatile scene and said the Department of Homeland Security had not provided specific details about the shooting in its communications with the local police department.

Gov. Tim Walz said he spoke with the White House “after another horrific shooting by federal agents this morning,” in a post on X.

State and federal lawmakers said they were seeking information about the shooting. The Minnesota Bureau of Criminal Apprehension is conducting an investigation.

A Department of Homeland Security spokesperson told NOTUS the “suspect had a firearm with 2 magazines” and provided a photograph of a firearm on the seat of a car.

In a post on social media, DHS said federal agents were attempting to apprehend an undocumented immigrant the administration claims was “wanted for violent assault.” During that immigration enforcement operation, DHS said a man approached the U.S. Border Patrol officers with a handgun, at which point a federal agent “fired defensive shots,” killing the man.

Bystander video of the incident, which O’Hara said local law enforcement has reviewed, appears to show federal agents holding a man to the ground before multiple shots are fired. Another video appears to show the man filming the federal agents with his phone.

“This looks like a situation where an individual wanted to do maximum damage and massacre law enforcement,” DHS posted. “About 200 rioters arrived at the scene and began to obstruct and assault law enforcement on the scene, crowd control measures were deployed for the safety of the public and law enforcement.”

O’Hara said the man who federal agents shot and killed was a lawful gun owner.

The National Border Patrol Council, the union representing Border Patrol agents, defended its agents and officers in a statement posted on X.

“We have full confidence that when more facts are revealed, our agents and officers will be shown to have utilized justifiable force in eliminating the threat,” the post read.

The White House confirmed President Donald Trump has been briefed on the shooting but provided no further comment.

The city called on residents to “remain calm and avoid the immediate area.” O’Hara repeated that call, declaring the crowd at the scene an unlawful assembly. He called on protesters to leave the scene.

Immediately after the shooting, bystanders and protesters rushed to the scene of the incident, according to local reports. Federal officials have reportedly responded to the growing crowd with tear gas and flash bangs.

Walz and the state’s two Democratic senators called on the White House to remove federal law enforcement from the city.

“Minnesota has had it. This is sickening,” Walz posted. “The President must end this operation. Pull the thousands of violent, untrained officers out of Minnesota. Now.”

Sens. Amy Klobuchar and Tina Smith made similar demands of the Trump administration.

“I will update as soon as possible. To the Trump administration and the Republicans in Congress who have stood silent: Get ICE out of our state NOW,” Klobuchar posted.

“Another catastrophic shooting in Minneapolis by federal agents,” Smith posted. “We are gathering more information, but ICE must leave now so MPD can secure the scene and do their jobs.”

Frey said Minneapolis has been invaded by the federal government.

“How many more lives need to be lost before this administration realizes that a political and partisan narrative is not as important as American values,” he said during a press conference Saturday afternoon.

Minnesota’s House Democrats Reps. Angie Craig and Betty McCollum also posted about the incident.

“How much more evidence do my Republican colleagues in Minnesota need to speak out?” Craig said on X.

McCollum called for a “full investigation” and for the administration to “stop all DHS operations in Minnesota.”

The shooting comes the morning after thousands of people took to the streets in Minneapolis in subzero temperatures to protest ICE’s presence in the state. Federal officials shot and killed Renee Good, a woman protesting an ICE operation in Minneapolis, in early January.

The Trump administration has since surged its presence in the city and cracked down on protesters.

The shooting sparked immediate nationwide outrage from Democratic officials.

Sen. Ed Markey renewed calls for DHS Secretary Kristi Noem’s impeachment.

“ICE thugs just shot and killed a man in Minneapolis. Eyewitnesses are describing it as an execution,” Markey posted. “We cannot keep living like this and people can’t keep dying like this. Stop funding ICE. Impeach Kristi Noem. Hold these ICE agents accountable.”

More than 100 Democratic lawmakers have signed on to an impeachment resolution against Noem, citing her obstruction of congressional oversight and ICE’s aggravated tactics.

“This is all spiraling out of control,” Sen. Andy Kim posted. “When Trump declared war on the enemy from within and said our cities were to be training grounds, he knew exactly what he was unleashing on us.”

“He has brought chaos and fear and made all of us less safe,” Kim continued. “This needs to stop now.”
