After facing intense ire from President Donald Trump for pushing for the release of the Epstein files, Rep. Marjorie Taylor Greene announced Friday that she plans to resign from the House of Representatives in January.
“I have too much self respect and dignity, love my family way too much, and do not want my sweet district to have to endure a hurtful and hateful primary against me by the President we all fought for, only to fight and win my election while Republicans will likely lose the midterms,” Greene wrote in a statement posted online.
“It’s all so absurd and completely unserious,” she added. “I refuse to be a ‘battered wife’ hoping it all goes away and gets better.”
Greene was elected to her Georgia district five years ago and long served as one of Trump’s closest allies in the House. Their relationship fell apart this month over Greene’s support for a discharge petition for a bill requiring the release of materials related to the late convicted sex offender Jeffrey Epstein.
Trump withdrew his endorsement and called Greene a traitor in a social media screed that she said resulted in threats against her. Once it became clear the legislation had enough support for a vote, the president said he would back it, and it passed almost unanimously.
“Standing up for American women who were raped at 14, trafficked and used by rich powerful men, should not result in me being called a traitor and threatened by the President of the United States, whom I fought for,” Greene wrote.
Earlier this week, House Republican lawmakers told NOTUS they thought the rift between Greene and the president could be mended. But Greene also had harsh words for many of her fellow Republicans, whom she accused of losing sight of “MAGA” principles.
In recent weeks, Greene told confidants she would like to run for president, NOTUS previously reported. Jan. 5 is set to be her last day in Congress.
Losing Greene would drop Republicans to 218 members of the House, shrinking Speaker Mike Johnson’s already-slim margin in the chamber.
“When the common American people finally realize and understand that the Political Industrial Complex of both parties is ripping this country apart, that not one elected leader like me is able to stop Washington’s machine from gradually destroying our country, and instead the reality is that they, common Americans, The People, possess the real power over Washington, then I’ll be here by their side to rebuild it,” Greene wrote in the resignation announcement.
“Until then I’m going back to the people I love, to live life to the fullest as I always have, and look forward to a new path ahead.”
“There is no ‘plan to save the world’ or insane 4D chess game being played,” she added.
