THE LATEST

Donald Trump spoke this afternoon in Michigan, touting his economic agenda and blasting former administrations for actions he said have hurt the auto industry in this key swing state.

• “I’ve done more for you than your parents, OK? Your parents are good, I’m not gonna knock your parents, but I have been better to you than your parents,” Trump told the audience.
• Former Michigan GOP Rep. Mike Rogers is expected to face a tough Senate race against either Rep. Haley Stevens or Abdul El-Sayed, who will debate tonight ahead of the Aug. 4 primary.

Trump thinks the Senate should delay its planned August recess until it passes the SAVE America Act, he posted on Truth Social this morning.

• John Thune has repeatedly insisted that the voting bill doesn’t have the votes. “He’s got to get his job done. It’s fine. I have a good relationship with John Thune,” Trump told reporters later today. Trump added that he’s never thought about replacing Thune.

THE HILL

Sen. Mitch McConnell is not yet medically cleared to return to work after his June 14 fall, he said in a press release that included a new photo of the senator.

The House Ethics Committee announced it is looking into Rep. Lance Gooden (R-Texas), saying it would announce next steps by Nov. 9.

THE ADMINISTRATION

Trump said the U.S. had paused strikes on Iran at Tehran’s request in a renewed attempt at diplomacy.

• Trump told Axios that the two countries were in “very deep talks,” but threatened “very strong military action” if they don’t move quickly.

ICE has made plans to target and detain Haitian immigrants as hundreds of thousands of Haitians prepare for their Temporary Protected Status to expire, CBS reports.

Asylum applicants could see their cases funneled directly to immigration courts following a rule change this morning, allowing USCIS officers to potentially skip interviewing those applying for asylum and instead send them to immigration judges.

THE COURTS

James Comey asked a judge Monday to dismiss the federal charges against him for posting a photo of seashells spelling out “86 47” last year.

THE STATES

The investigation of Pete Buttigeig that separated him from his twins last month stemmed from an unsubstantiated allegation from someone authorities later deemed possibly “mentally unstable,” The Washington Post reported.
