A federal judge on Monday temporarily blocked a provision of President Donald Trump’s flagship domestic policy bill that effectively served as a one-year Medicaid funding ban on Planned Parenthood.
“Upon consideration of Plaintiffs’ Emergency Motion for a Temporary Restraining Order and Preliminary Injunction and accompanying memorandum of law and supporting declarations, and finding good cause shown, it is hereby ORDERED that the request for a Temporary Restraining Order is GRANTED,” wrote United States District Judge Indira Talwani in the granted temporary restraining order.
The funding cut in the massive domestic policy package, which Trump branded as his “one big, beautiful bill,” prohibited for one year federal Medicaid funding to Planned Parenthood and other major providers of abortion. Monday’s order was granted in response to a lawsuit filed by Planned Parenthood that claimed the funding cut was unconstitutional.
“There is no legitimate justification for the statute; rather, the true design of the Defund Provision is simply to express disapproval of, attack, and punish Planned Parenthood,” the original suit states.
The suit, and likely ensuing legal battle, come shortly after the Supreme Court ruled states can remove Planned Parenthood from their Medicaid programs and that individuals can’t sue if their state denies them Medicaid access to their selected health care provider.
This is a developing story and will be updated.
