A man was arrested over the weekend after allegedly punching Rep. Maxwell Frost in the face at a Sundance Film Festival party in Park City, Utah.
The Florida Democrat said the attack, which reportedly took place at a late-night event hosted by the Creative Artists Agency (CAA), was racially motivated.
“I was assaulted by a man at Sundance Festival who told me that Trump was going to deport me before he punched me in the face,” Frost posted to X. “He was heard screaming racist remarks as he drunkenly ran off. The individual was arrested and I am okay.”
Park City police confirmed to The Hollywood Reporter that officers responded to reports of an assault early Saturday morning at High West Saloon.
Police ultimately arrested a suspect identified as 28-year-old Christian Joel Young, and determined that he “unlawfully entered a private party after previously being turned away for not having an invitation. Once inside the saloon, Young assaulted Florida Congressman Maxwell Frost and a female who was attending the private event,” according to a department spokesperson.
In addition to punching Frost, the affidavit filed Sunday alleges he grabbed the shoulder of an unidentified woman who was with Frost and “pushed her out of his way and against the bar,” before being subdued.
House Minority Leader Hakeem Jeffries said in a post to X that he was “horrified by the attack.”
“Grateful that he is okay, but appalled that this terrifying assault took place. The perpetrator must be aggressively prosecuted,” Jeffries wrote. “Hate and political violence has no place in our country, and the entire House Democratic Caucus family stands with Maxwell.”
Young, who has a prior misdemeanor conviction, is being held without bail on charges of simple assault, assault on an elected official and aggravated burglary, according to court records. County Judge Richard Mrazik declared Young a “substantial danger” to the community and a flight risk.
