President Donald Trump said Thursday that the U.S. will submit a bid to host the World Expo in 2035 — and named Secretary of State Marco Rubio to lead the push to host it in Miami.

Trump announced the plan in a Truth Social post and claimed that Florida wants to host the Expo.

“Miami Expo 2035 can be the next big milestone in our new Golden Age of America,” he said.

Rubio was tasked to lead the bidding process, just the latest in the string of assignments Trump has given him — including interim national security adviser, acting national archivist, chief of the U.S. Agency for International Development and the president’s point person in Venezuela.

“I am appointing Miami native Secretary of State Marco Rubio to Chair the efforts of coordinating and advancing this exciting opportunity to convene the World.”

Rubio’s expanding list of assignments has also become a punchline on social media, with users sharing AI-generated images of him in other roles such as governor of Minnesota, Shah of Iran, and president of Colombia.

CBS News raised eyebrows earlier this month after airing a relatively lighthearted story titled “The Many Roles of Marco Rubio,” in which newly inaugurated host Tony Dokoupil ran through the viral memes surrounding the secretary of state and his many jobs in the Trump administration.

Trump said the Expo would boost the economy, claiming it would create thousands of jobs and add billions in growth for the Miami area. He also said he fought in his first term to bring the 2026 World Cup and the 2028 Los Angeles Olympics to the United States, along with other gatherings he said the country will host during his second term.

World Expos are months-long international fairs where countries build pavilions and share their local cultures. Host cities win the event through a vote overseen by the Bureau International des Expositions.
