Federal agents and an officer from the local sheriff’s office shot and killed an armed intruder at Mar-a-largo early Sunday morning, the Secret Service said in a statement.
The individual, a white male in his early 20s, was observed with a shotgun and fuel can along the north side of the president’s Florida clubhouse around 1:30 a.m. on Sunday.
“U.S. Secret Service agents and a PBSO [Palm Beach County Sheriff’s Office] deputy confronted the individual and shots were fired by law enforcement during the encounter,” the statement said.
During a Sunday morning press conference, local officials were joined by the FBI, which is taking the lead on the investigation.
The individual’s identity has not been released due to the active investigation. Palm Beach County Sheriff Ric Bradshaw said during Sunday’s press conference all officers involved were equipped with body-worn cameras. He added that the only words exchanged were, “Drop the items.”
“He put the gas can down and pointed the shotgun at the officers,” Bradshaw said.
President Donald Trump, who often spends weekends at Mar-a-lago, was in Washington D.C. this weekend at the time of the shooting.
