Sam Fortier

Reporter

Sam covers people and power in D.C., focusing on how the city’s power classes, led by the Trump administration, are transforming the social infrastructure of the nation’s capital.

He joined NOTUS in May 2026 after seven years at the Washington Post, where he covered sports, most recently national feature stories, including an investigation into the suspicious death of NFL owner Jim Irsay that prompted an FBI investigation.

Before that, he covered the Washington Commanders for five turbulent seasons, including a name change, the fall of former owner Dan Snyder and the rise of rookie quarterback Jayden Daniels. He also covered the Washington Nationals when the team won the World Series in 2019.

He began his career at The Athletic, where he covered the Los Angeles Chargers, and at The Ringer, where he wrote feature stories.

Sam was born and raised in rural New England and graduated from Syracuse with a degree in magazine journalism in 2018.
