A police officer died early Monday morning after a shooting at the Second District station in Northwest D.C., though city officials say there was no one else involved in the incident.
“On Monday, August 31, 2026, at approximately 5:02 a.m., a [Metropolitan Police Department] officer suffered a critical injury from a gunshot wound while inside the Second District police station in the 3300 block of Idaho Avenue NW. The officer was transported to a nearby hospital, where they later succumbed to their injuries,” said an MPD spokesman in an email.
“MPD’s Internal Affairs Bureau responded to the scene to investigate. Nothing currently indicates that another party was involved,” they added.
The death comes almost two years to the date after investigator Wayne David died on August 28, 2024, after a gun he was trying to recover from a storm drain discharged.

Six MPD officers have died in the line of duty since 2000. The most recent came in January, when Officer Terry Bennett was struck and killed by a driver while assisting another motorist on I-695.
