Some Democratic officials in South Florida are preparing to run for Congress in the event that 83-year-old Rep. Frederica Wilson, who has not voted in the House since mid-April, decides not to seek reelection, NOTUS has learned.
At least two Democrats, state Sen. Shevrin Jones and Miami Dade County Commissioner Oliver Gilbert, are mulling a run if Wilson retires, according to two sources familiar with the matter. The congresswoman’s office did not immediately respond to NOTUS’ questions on whether she is running for reelection but told NBC News she plans to return to the House next week.
One of the sources said Jones spoke with a close friend of Wilson’s on Thursday afternoon and asked about Wilson’s plans. A source close to Jones told NOTUS he would run “if the opportunity presents itself.”
The offices of Jones and Gilbert did not immediately respond to NOTUS’ requests for comment.

Wilson filed to run for reelection in September 2025. Rumors that she could step down after this term started due to the congresswoman’s extended absence from Congress: her last recorded vote in Washington was on April 17.
House Minority Leader Hakeem Jeffries told reporters Thursday that Wilson is “recovering from a procedure, and I expect that she’ll be back shortly.”
