Washington, D.C.’s police department is investigating Republican Rep. Cory Mills of Florida for an alleged assault after an incident was reported at a residential address two miles west of the U.S. Capitol, the Metropolitan Police Department confirmed to NOTUS.
MPD said officers responded to a report of an assault around 1:15 p.m. on Wednesday, Feb. 19. According to the incident report obtained by NOTUS, there is an active criminal investigation underway for simple assault.
The incident report does not name Mills; however, when asked by NOTUS who the alleged perpetrator was, MPD confirmed the Florida lawmaker was under investigation for alleged simple assault.
Mills was not arrested at the scene and is scheduled to speak at the Conservative Political Action Conference, which is being held in the Washington area this week. Mills declined to comment on the record and Mills’ office did not respond to a request for comment.
A spokesperson for Mills told Fox News that the lawmaker has denied any wrongdoing.
“This week, law enforcement was asked to resolve a private matter at Congressman Mills’ residence. Congressman Mills vehemently denies any wrongdoing whatsoever, and is confident any investigation will clear this matter quickly,” the spokesperson said.
In a text message to NOTUS, the alleged victim confirmed she “reached out to law enforcement to address a personal matter,” but that there was “no physical altercation.”
NOTUS has kept the name of the alleged victim anonymous to protect her privacy.
“Once MPD leadership became aware of this matter there was an immediate review of our initial response to ensure all procedures were followed,” MPD said in a statement to NOTUS Thursday evening. “MPD’s Internal Affairs Bureau is currently investigating this matter.”
MPD confirmed that the internal investigation is into MPD’s handling of the call.
A second-term House lawmaker and U.S. Army veteran, Mills is a staunch ally of President Donald Trump. He has previously told reporters that he intends to run for Senate in Florida for the seat most recently held by Secretary of State Marco Rubio.
Mills is also currently the subject of a House ethics investigation for a matter that was submitted to the House Committee on Ethics in August of last year.
