George Conway — co-founder of the anti-Donald Trump Lincoln Project and ex-husband of Trump political operative Kellyanne Conway — announced he will run for New York’s 12th District, which covers much of Manhattan.
Paperwork filed with the Federal Election Commission on Monday shows that Conway is running as a Democrat.
Conway will seek to replace Rep. Jerry Nadler in an already crowded Democratic primary field. Nadler has served in the U.S. House since 1992.
Conway was once a conservative attorney and Trump supporter. But shortly after Trump first became president in 2017, Conway declined to be a part of his administration, claiming Trump was mentally unfit to hold office.
Conway routinely criticized Trump online, even while his ex-wife, Kellyanne Conway, worked as a top Trump White House adviser. Conway then co-founded the Lincoln Project super PAC — an organization of former Republicans who oppose Trump — ahead of the 2020 election.
Trump has slammed George Conway as a “husband from hell” and “stone-cold loser.”
Despite leaving the Lincoln Project, Conway has remained a regular Trump critic.
Conway, who could not immediately be reached for comment, said on a podcast at The Bulwark over the weekend that his next venture would be “either the stupidest thing I’ve ever done, or the best thing.”
Other candidates in New York’s 12th District primary within the exceptionally liberal district include: Alan Pardee, a former managing director at Merrill Lynch; Jack Schlossberg, a member of the Kennedy family and online commentator; state Assemblymember Micah Lasher; state Assemblymember Alex Bores; gun safety activist Cameron Kasky; and Jami Floyd, a journalist and former White House correspondent during the Clinton administration.
